Advanced Clinical Training Program

Now accepting applications for the 2019-20 class of trainees. Click HERE for applicant instructions.

The Delaware Guidance Services Advanced Clinical Training Program is a two year workforce development effort designed to train master’s level graduates to become competent clinicians and obtain licensure.

With the help of a grant from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware six years ago, we have been able to begin this program and enhance the experience and expertise of therapists in and around the State of Delaware, giving them an advantage in the marketplace and the ability to better serve the growing needs of Delaware’s Children and Youth and their families. Through the success of the program and its trainees, DGS has been able to continue the program beyond its initial one year pilot. We are happy to say that the program has now become a permanent program that we offer every year.

With over 25,000 children and adolescents in Delaware in need of mental health treatment services, it is critical that we have a quality professional workforce available to meet the growing need. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, not only do mental health problems affect one in every five young people at any given time, but an estimated two-thirds of all young people with mental health problems are not getting the help they need. The rate of unmet needs is even higher for minorities, especially Hispanic children with 88% not receiving needed mental health care.

Advanced Clinical Training Program Trainees will experience:

  • Seminars and advanced training courses that will cover and extend beyond the range of issues research has shown where new clinicians need further training. Examples include: suicide assessment and treatment, ethical considerations, family therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, therapeutic alliance, evidence-based therapies, etc.
  • Practical experience in Outpatient Therapy within the largest non-residential not-for-profit child and family mental health agency in Delaware. Caseloads approximately ¾ the size of a full-time clinician will provide experience across the broad spectrum of outpatient issues from adjustment difficulties and attention problems, to complex trauma.
  • Trainees will receive a minimum of one hour weekly supervision and up to three hours of group supervision per week from highly qualified and experienced licensed therapists (Three hours first year, 1.5 hours second year).

Recruitment for the Advanced Clinical Training program is currently underway, with the selection of the sixth class of trainees to be completed this spring. The training program will then commence in September.
